Most robotics startups promise what factories might look like years from now. Walden Robotics says its robots are already on the job.

The company emerged from stealth on Wednesday with a $300 million seed round, valuing the startup at $1.1 billion post-money. At the same time, Walden revealed that its general-purpose AI robots are already operating in production at a Toyota manufacturing plant in North America, marking one of the earliest large-scale commercial deployments of Physical AI systems from a newly launched robotics company.

Founded in January 2026 as a spinout from Toyota Research Institute (TRI), Walden Robotics is commercializing years of robotics research focused on giving machines the ability to learn useful physical skills instead of relying on hard-coded instructions. The company is betting that factories and warehouses will become the first large-scale proving grounds for AI-powered robots that can adapt to changing environments and perform a wide range of industrial tasks.

That strategy has attracted backing from some of the biggest names in technology, manufacturing, and logistics. The seed round was co-led by Toyota and Deviation Capital, with participation from NVIDIA, Boeing, Samsung NEXT, Prologis Ventures, CoreWeave Ventures, AE Industrial Partners, Calibrate Ventures, Toyota Ventures, and other investors.

Walden’s technology traces its roots to Toyota Research Institute’s work on Large Behavior Models, or LBMs. Similar to how large language models learn patterns from massive amounts of text, LBMs learn physical actions by connecting sensor inputs and natural language instructions with robot behavior. The company combines those models with Diffusion Policy, a machine learning technique that allows robots to acquire complex, multi-step skills by learning from human demonstrations.

The result is a fleet of general-purpose wheeled humanoid robots built for busy manufacturing environments where tasks change throughout the day. According to Walden, the systems are already handling car-part transportation, machinery cleaning, assembly kitting, machine tending, tool setting, and parts preparation inside Toyota’s production facility.

That deployment is significant for the robotics industry, which has often struggled to move beyond carefully controlled demonstrations. Many startups have shown impressive prototypes only to spend years trying to make them dependable enough for continuous factory operation. Walden’s announcement suggests its systems have already crossed that gap.

Unlike many robotics startups that specialize in either hardware or software, Walden controls the full technology stack. The company develops the robots, builds the AI systems that control them, creates industrial applications, manages deployments, and continues training the robots after they reach customer sites. That gives the company direct access to operational data that can improve future models through real-world experience.

Walden’s approach is deeply influenced by Toyota’s manufacturing philosophy. The company says its robots are built around the principles of *kaizen*, or continuous improvement, and *jidoka*, often described as automation with a human touch. The goal is to assign repetitive or physically demanding work to robots so people can focus on tasks that require judgment, creativity, and problem-solving.

That philosophy reflects ideas championed for years by Russ Tedrake, the MIT Toyota Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Tedrake’s research has centered on creating robots that learn practical skills and can leave the lab to succeed in unpredictable industrial settings.

The timing may be working in Walden’s favor. Manufacturers across North America continue to face labor shortages, higher operating costs, and pressure to increase production without sacrificing quality. General-purpose robots that can learn multiple jobs rather than perform a single repetitive task have become one of the industry’s biggest goals.

Physical AI has attracted billions of dollars in investment over the past two years, fueled by advances in foundation models and machine learning. Many companies are racing to build humanoid robots, though few have demonstrated sustained commercial deployment inside active production facilities.

Walden’s announcement stands out for that reason. Rather than presenting a vision of what factories could look like years from now, the company says its robots are already working inside one of the world’s largest automotive manufacturers.

Its message is captured in a simple statement on the company’s website: “Robots ready to work. With you. Today.”

The next challenge is scale. With fresh capital, backing from Toyota, and customers already using its systems in production, Walden Robotics enters the Physical AI race with something many competitors are still chasing: robots earning their place on the factory floor instead of waiting for it.
