Vital Lyfe, a tech startup founded by former SpaceX engineers, has raised $24 million to bring portable, infrastructure-free water production closer to everyday use. The financing includes more than $18 million in seed funding, with the remainder structured as committed debt. Interlagos and General Catalyst led the round, with Generational Partners, Cantos, Space VC, and Also Capital joining.
The fresh capital will fund manufacturing scale-up, expand early field deployments, and advance the company toward its first consumer-ready systems, slated to launch in 2026. Vital Lyfe is positioning its technology as a new option for producing clean water in areas where traditional infrastructure is lacking or never existed.
Vital Lyfe Raises $24M to Build Portable Water-Making Systems That Work Anywhere on Earth
Founded by former SpaceX engineering leaders Jon Criss and Andrew Harner, Vital Lyfe applies aerospace-grade engineering principles to water production. Its systems are built to generate filtered water from nearly any naturally occurring source, including seawater, without relying on centralized grids or fixed installations. The goal is ambitious and straightforward: make clean water available anywhere people need it.
“This funding is a major milestone in our mission to bring clean water directly to the people and organizations who need it most. For too long, clean water access has been constrained by outdated, centralized infrastructure. With this funding, we have the resources to accelerate our roadmap and work towards scaling a new technology – one that puts reliable, on-demand water generation in the hands of communities everywhere,” said Jon Criss, CEO and Founder of Vital Lyfe.
Water access remains one of the most persistent global challenges, shaped by aging infrastructure, climate stress, and geographic isolation. Vital Lyfe is betting that a decentralized approach can fill the gaps left by conventional systems. Its platform is engineered to operate independently in harsh environments, including marine settings, where desalination remains one of the most challenging technical problems to solve. That flexibility enables use cases ranging from maritime operations and disaster response to remote communities and off-grid users.
“This raise gives us the momentum to transition from validated prototypes to scaled production and real-world impact,” said Andrew Harner, COO and Founder of Vital Lyfe. “We’re building technology that is resilient, adaptable, and capable of transforming how communities access water without waiting for infrastructure to catch up. Our goal is simple but ambitious: clean water on demand, anywhere.”
The company is already working with maritime groups, NGOs, and other early partners to test its systems in high-stakes environments. These deployments are shaping durability, field readiness, and product refinement ahead of broader distribution.
Investors point to the founding team’s blend of deep engineering experience and manufacturing know-how as a key differentiator in a space where many concepts have stalled before reaching scale.
“Jon Criss and Andrew Harner are some of the best referenced founders we’ve come across,” said Grant Gregory, General Partner at Cantos. “It’s rare to find exceptional engineers that also have so much experience scaling manufacturing and driving commercialization. We spent considerable time evaluating various companies building in this space, and as soon as we met them we knew this was the team that was going to make this happen.”
Vital Lyfe’s platform signals a broader shift in how water access could be delivered in the future. By removing dependence on centralized systems and fixed infrastructure, the company aims to expand the reach of clean water production and access.
Founded with the mission “Water Without Limits,” Vital Lyfe is building portable, universal water-making systems that turn natural sources into purified water wherever people live, work, or travel. The company’s next chapter will test whether aerospace thinking can translate into global impact on the ground.
